Background of the Study
Family dynamics play a crucial role in shaping adolescents’ eating habits, with parental guidance and household practices significantly influencing dietary choices. In Osun State, where traditional family structures remain strong, the family environment is a primary determinant of food preferences, portion sizes, and overall nutritional intake among adolescents. Parental attitudes towards food, cooking practices, and meal patterns often serve as models for younger family members, thereby establishing long-term eating behaviors (Oluwatosin, 2023). As adolescents transition through critical developmental stages, the influence of family can either promote healthy eating habits or contribute to the adoption of unhealthy dietary patterns, such as excessive consumption of sugary or fatty foods.

In Osun State, socio-economic factors and cultural traditions further shape family eating practices. Traditional cuisines, while rich in cultural heritage, may sometimes be high in fats and carbohydrates, leading to imbalanced diets if not moderated. Moreover, with the increasing influence of globalization and urbanization, families are also exposed to fast-food culture, which competes with traditional home-cooked meals. This duality can result in inconsistent dietary practices that may predispose adolescents to nutritional deficiencies or obesity (Adekunle, 2024). Research has demonstrated that adolescents whose families prioritize nutritious meals are more likely to develop healthy eating habits and maintain a balanced diet, while those in households with poor dietary practices are at greater risk for diet-related health issues (Bello, 2025).

This study aims to examine the extent of family influence on adolescent eating habits in Osun State. By exploring the interplay between parental guidance, cultural practices, and external influences, the research will provide valuable insights into how family environments shape dietary behaviors. The findings are expected to inform strategies for promoting healthier eating habits within the family setting and to support policy initiatives that encourage nutritional education at the household level.

Statement of the Problem
Adolescent eating habits in Osun State are significantly influenced by family dynamics, yet there is limited research on how these influences contribute to either healthy or unhealthy dietary practices. Many families in the region adhere to traditional food practices that may not align with modern nutritional guidelines, while others are increasingly adopting fast-food consumption due to urban influences. This mixture of traditional and modern eating patterns often leads to inconsistent dietary behaviors among adolescents, resulting in either nutritional deficiencies or excessive caloric intake (Ojo, 2023).

The problem is compounded by a lack of comprehensive nutritional education within families, where parents may have limited knowledge about healthy eating practices. Consequently, adolescents are left to navigate dietary choices with little guidance, leading to a higher risk of developing obesity or other diet-related disorders. Furthermore, socio-economic constraints may force families to opt for cheaper, less nutritious food options, thereby reinforcing unhealthy eating habits. These issues highlight the critical need for an in-depth examination of the family’s role in shaping adolescent eating behaviors, as this understanding is key to designing effective interventions that promote nutritional well-being (Ibrahim, 2024).

This study seeks to fill the research gap by assessing the influence of family environment on adolescent eating habits in Osun State. It will explore the specific ways in which parental attitudes, household food availability, and cultural practices interact to influence dietary behaviors among adolescents, ultimately providing recommendations for enhancing nutritional education and promoting healthier family meal practices.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the influence of parental attitudes on adolescent eating habits in Osun State.
  2. To identify the key household factors that contribute to healthy or unhealthy dietary practices among adolescents.
  3. To propose family-based interventions to improve nutritional outcomes among adolescents.

Research Questions

  1. How do parental attitudes and practices influence adolescent eating habits in Osun State?
  2. What household factors are most closely associated with the development of healthy dietary behaviors?
  3. Which family-based intervention strategies can effectively promote healthier eating habits among adolescents?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Positive parental attitudes toward nutrition are significantly associated with healthier eating habits in adolescents.
  2. Households with consistent nutritional practices have adolescents with better dietary outcomes.
  3. Family-based nutritional education interventions will improve adolescents’ eating behaviors.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on families with adolescents in selected communities in Osun State. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions with parents and adolescents. Limitations include potential bias in self-reported data and cultural variability across different communities.
